An advertisement was placed by Missouri Gov. Austin A. King in a Jackson, Mo., newspaper that offered a $350 reward for the apprehension and delivery to the sheriff of Richard Warmack and Preston Hackworth, who escaped from the county jail on the night of Dec. 7, 1851, after taking the life of John L. Pettit on Nov. 1, 1851. The advertisement appeared in 1852 as the governor affixed his seal Jan. 19, 1852, indicating that the two were still on the loose at that time.
